FLUORINE CHEMISTRY

The sulfur pentafluoride (SF5) group represents one of the limited number of new functional groups that have been made available to organic chemists over the last century. The rationale for creating new sulfur pentafluoride (SF5)–bearing organic compounds is related to the fact that the SF5 group possesses a greater electronegativity and different spatial charge distribution than the frequentlyutilized trifluoromethyl group (CF3), and, as a result, the SF5 addition is thought to represent an potentially advantageous alternative to the well–established and widely-used practice of creating useful compounds (e.g. pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, liquid crystals, electrical conducting compounds, others) bearing the CF3 moiety. More specifically, the SF5 group (pentafluorosulfanyl) has been described as the “substituent of the future” and it has been suggested that yet to be synthesized compounds containing the SF5 moiety may likely represent the next wave of highly useful fluorochemicals that will be further distinguished over their predecessor CF3–bearing compounds by their outstanding chemical properties.

As a solution to the unmet need for an affordable supply of sulfur fluorides (SF5Cl, SF5Br, SF4 and SF6), AvantFluor has invented efficient, cost-effective processes for the production of pure sulfur fluorides that may change the way these compounds are manufactured and utilized. Our processes may streamline the production of sulfur fluorides and other fluoro-compounds to more efficiently generate the following:

IMPROVED SYNTHESIS OF SULFUR FLUORIDES

AvantFluor’s new patent-pending processes for the synthesis of sulfur fluorides may now represent significant improvements over established sulfur fluoride manufacturing methods:

Single-step, low temperature and pressure, synthesis process that is free  of contaminating compounds (e.g. SF4 free of S2F2 and SF6 free of S2F10)
Process synthesizes sulfur fluorides in as little as 5-10 hours.
Sulfur fluorides can be used to generate CF, CF2 , CF3 and SF5
moieties on aliphatic and aromatic compounds.
